SMPS NERC recap: growth, leadership, and AEC marketing insights

Updated: Apr 9

From First-Time Attendee to Industry Peer

Three years ago, I walked into my first SMPS NERC conference as a scholarship recipient, eager to learn and explore the AEC world outside of my DC chapter. This year, I walked into NERC in my hometown of Washington, DC—during peak cherry blossom season—surrounded by familiar faces, stronger connections, and a very different sense of confidence. What once felt new and overwhelming now felt familiar and validating, a full circle moment that highlighted just how much can change in a few short years.

Back in 2023, everything about NERC was new to me. I was focused on soaking it all in, learning as much as I could, bringing back ideas to my team, and meeting as many people as possible (while also enjoying Philly for the first time). Fast forward to this year, and being back felt different in the best way. There was a level of familiarity. Not just with people, but with the work itself. I had so many conversations with peers who already knew Dragonfly and what we do, which was both exciting and validating.

Leadership Takeaways: The Risk of “Mislabels”

One of my biggest takeaways this year is that growth in this industry isn’t always about big, groundbreaking ideas. It’s about continuing to learn, refining what you already know, and sharing those experiences with others. I attended sessions on thought leadership, brand building, presentation coaching, and proposal management—all part of my day-to-day. And honestly, it was reassuring to hear that others are working through the same challenges. Sometimes, going back to the basics is exactly what you need.

Keynote speaker Skot Waldron gave a very powerful presentation on leadership and “mislabels.” What I appreciated most about his presentation was how he humanized people. Leaders or those in leadership roles can be quick to label others as lazy, unorganized, or disengaged when, in reality, they may just have different working styles or be navigating challenges we’re not aware of. It was a powerful reminder to lead with empathy, especially in an industry that’s so deadline-driven.

The Power of Industry Relationships

Another highlight was reconnecting with people I met at my first NERC conference. Back then, we were all new. This year, I saw many of those same peers stepping into more advanced roles and really owning their expertise. It’s a reminder of how small and connected this industry is and how quickly you can grow within it. It was even one of those “small world” moments where I crossed paths with someone connected to my early days as a proposal coordinator in Phoenix.

And of course, beyond the sessions, it’s always about the people. One of my favorite moments was dinner on the second night with a group of industry friends. The conversation went way beyond work—from motherhood, changes in career path, what inspires us, and even the types of clients we choose to work with. It’s those kinds of conversations that stick with you. There’s something really special about connecting with people who just get it.

What This Year’s SMPS NERC Reinforced

Walking away from NERC this year, I’m bringing back more than just session notes. I’m bringing back a sense of confidence, a deeper appreciation for this community, and a reminder that growth doesn’t have to be groundbreaking to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, doing the work, and realizing you’ve come a lot further than you thought. And that’s something I’m excited to carry forward.
